Quick Update! The email version got messed up this week. Please enjoy the original version of the text on the web or the Substack app. 😘
Sure, the forums are still down, but who needs to talk when you can listen? To people talking about music. And the music itself, of course.
To wit: Michael Land, Peter McConnell, and Clint Bajakian’s GDC talk, “Thirty Years Later: Scoring 'Return to Monkey Island',“ is available from the GDC Vault—sadly the video can’t be embedded.
I won’t recap much of it here as you really will want to watch the hour-long bonanza, but if you need some highlights: You get McConnell talk about music quotations (and do some mean Looney Toons impressions) on Brrr Muda. Bajakian breaks down his LeShip suite. And, Land shows the finer points of his painstaking variations of Mêlée, including a piano version of it. (And you get a bunch on LeChuck’s Revenge transitions, too.)
Just watch it—it’s something you need in life.
Dead Geese: A Retrospective
Not-so-longtime readers will remember our shocking revalation showing how the SCUMM Bar theme actually is the old drinking song “O Good Ale Thou Art My Darling.“ That led us down the path to Stan’s LeChuck’s Revenge theme: the classic children’s song “Go Tell Aunt Rhody.” Things got creative. And we asked ourselves, what if the CD-ROM version of The Secret of Monkey Island had quoted that, and not the “bopping” tune we ended up with? Here’s the answer:
Now, let’s turn the tables:
What a weird tune The Secret of Monkey Island served up.
As for Jason’s reaction to all of this music shenanigans, he did what he does best: Cussing out our readers.
But, let’s return to Return to Monkey Island: Do yourself a favor and download the fan-mixed suites as well as the complete 4.5 hour score. The rest of your day will be set.
As for an OST? We already knew that a CD will be part of the ReMI LRG, but in the aforementioned GDC video, McConnell threw out CDs, plural. And there were some vinyl murmurs. Slip of the tongue? We’ll see soon enough!
