The Adventurer - Issue #26
It’s The Adventurer: Every week, we send an email full of news, media, and who-knows-what (we don’t) – make sure to share all the fun with your friends and loved ones!
The Editor Welcomes You
Bit of a quiet week on the news front. Good job I’m too busy to worry about adventure game happenings anyway, freezing to death in my dressing gown while the country plunges further into energy and economic crises.
But you know what? Nothing warms the cockles like firing up a Monkey Island game and cocooning yourself in its loving embrace. As I stroll over the Brimstone Beach Club’s burning hot sands, I’m taken back to a care-free time when having a nice, hot cup of tea didn’t cost £30.
Anyway, enough about me. What are you doing now the buzz of Return’s release has passed? Playing it again to unearth new secrets? Watching longplays of Monkey Island as if they were episodes of Friends? Writing a novel? Or just trying to keep the embers going by enjoying the latest Ron interview? Get on those forums and let us know.
News from All Over
What mode is the ultimate Return to Monkey Island mode, the one a hardcore fan would consider the one and true version? That was the question we asked on Twitter: You got two "Hard" modes -- regular and "Writer's Cut" -- with those two also applied to the "Casual" mode. The result:
Hard: 25.6%
Hard, Writer’s Cut: 70.8%
Casual: 2.8%
Casual, Writer’s Cut: 0.8%
Some reasonable picks. "Hard" and "Casual" are definitely the way to go for most, with "Hard" balancing the flow with puzzles that aren't that hard. (Plus, that built-in hint book can make the game pretty "Casual" for those who don't have that much time on their hand.)
But for those of us that have a, shall we say, "less than healthy" relationship with the Monkey Island franchise? I'd argue the "Writer's Cut" has a perfect flow if you're the type of person who investigates every corner already -- there aren't too many additions, and we want every morsel of dialogue, anyway.
Converesely, I do think the initial meeting with the old Pirate Leaders should have been included in every mode, as it does give the Cod's Wallop more of a backstory. But now I'm nitpicking.
71% on the side of "Hard, Writer's Cut," though: The fans have a clear opinion on what the preferred version of ReMI is.
We've run some other polls over in the spoiler forums, too, but we're keeping those hidden from The Adventurer for now. Spoilers abound.
As for spoilers that are accessible for only those who've want to see them, we've posted a couple of Twitter. Watch, but be warned, these have a few Part I nuggets in them.
Finally, the Monkey Island-book Kickstarter is steamrolling in, with an incredible amount of perks being added every other day. Back it, if you already haven't.
