Issue #59: Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot
Thirty years of Mojo is frightfully close – happy new year!
We can shout, scream, plead, beg – and god knows we do – but there is no way to get around it: We’re entering Mojo’s 28th year. Twenty. Eighth. Year. At this point, most of our illustrious staff has been around for 20+ years, which, frankly, is depressing. But what can you do?
We can keep trucking on, that’s what, and somewhat miraculously, we have all kinds of features coming up in 2025. Why? Simply because Mojo loves you just as much as you love Mojo. Read on for a short preview of what will keep you entertained in what likely will be an unpredictable (💥) year.
Cheerfully yours,
Remi
A Word About the Sosh
As you may or may not know: Our Bluesky account has been borked for a while now, meaning we can’t post to it. Who knows what’s going on, but we’re apparently in line with support, so 🫠. For now (and forever, really), follow The SCUMM Bar’s account for Mojo updates.
2024’s “Best of” and 2025’s Possible Possibilities
The results of our polls were posted, and the year was summed up in our annual retrospective, where some of our findings… well, they didn’t exactly shock us, but we were mildly surprised.
That Monkey Island was popular amongst our readers wasn’t unexpected, but looking at our polls where the game’s three 2024 articles sat on top with a 70% total… That’s pretty commanding, particularly when taken into the context of our Google stats. Return to Monkey Island, in particular, looks to dominate the zeitgeist, even two years after its release. So, look forward to more Monkey Island in the new year – we’re not above pandering. (What do you mean you already knew?)
While Indiana Jones and the Great Circle won our “Game of the Year“ award, Return to Monkey Island still occupies most of our readers’ mindspace. Strangely, Zak was also one of our largest Google searches of the year. Speaking of! Congratulations to Mojole-champion Sushi for taking home a triangle box alongside three Double Fine/LucasArts games in our end-of-year contest.
Web Games
Mojole hit 1,000 words this year and, yes, we know, the game is almost impossibly difficult now, so look forward to a new game debuting next week – Monkey Island Frantic. Speaking of, check out The Legend of Monkey Island’s new Heardle clone, Guess That Tune.
The Adventurer: Where Next, Literally Speaking
One thing that hit me when we resurrected The Adventurer and subsequently limped through the end of 2024: How do you prefer reading it? Should we keep it an email newsletter? Or make it a proper weekly Mojo article – which would involve using the sosh for notifications instead of email? Make your voice heard:
Person of the Year
Man, we forgot to add that poll for our end-of-year roundup. Whatever, I think we all know who the winner would have been…
… and may god bless us all!
