Issue #69: Oh, Stop Your Snickering
Psychonauts keeps being celebrated like Psychonauts should be celebrated.
The Psychonauts festivities continue as memories come flooding back. Jake reminded me that I found him insufferable during his 2004 Psychonauts playtesting era, which sounds on-brand (me calling him insufferable – and probably him being insufferable, too). I’m fairly certain I was just miffed about Schafer conflating Remo with RemiO. Good times! More virtual Psychonauts ephemera below.
Meanwhile, over on Mojo proper, we’ve made some updates to our (loosely defined) systems. You can finally log in using a magic link – that’s a login link sent to your email – in addition to using your username and password. Forgotten your password? We’ve set up a reset page, basically leaving you with no excuse for not leaving comments on our edifying news updates.
Until next time,
Remi
Videos Videos Videos!
Let’s kick it off with the latest video from Double Fine, where Tim chats about fifteen inspirations for Psychonauts. That Monkey Island 2 “Dem Bones” snippet? Courtesy of your friends at Mojo.
For no particular reason, this reminds me of one of my favorite cut-scenes, where Nikki Rapp delivers a pitch-perfect “Oh my god, let’s make out!” (Rapp, what a pro.)
And, not to leave Psychonauts 2 out: The “Meeting the Aquatos” scene is a chef’s kiss in its own right.
Speaking of Favorites…
Over on their website, Double Fine polled their fans about who their favorite Psychonauts characters are. The result:
Raz
Sasha and Milla
Loboto
Ford
Coach Oleander
Oleander will always have a place in my heart. Go read the whole post.
Also, check out Scott C critiquing Psychonauts fan art.
And to cap it off, you can win some signed Scott art, which, why wouldn’t you want that?
Vintage Psychonauts Mojo Content
“1337 Speak”: Did you know Psychonauts lets you switch written dialogue to 1337? Well, now you do.
“It’s shoppy time!” (Apr 19th, 2005): The Double Fine Shop has always been a wonderous place, right from its April 19th, 2005 beginnings. I distinctly remember picking up the classic 2HB shirt…
… as well as the hipper-than-thou Kochamara…
Should’ve kept ‘em – I can only assume they’d fetch a good price on eBay.
“Psychonauts - ouch“ (Jun 30th, 2005): For a while, it looked like Psychonauts would be a disappointment sales-wise. It would, of course, go on to become a cult hit over time, so all’s well that ends well.
“Whispering Rock gets an overhaul in Psychonauts 2 art test“ (Oct 9th, 2016): Remember how Double Fine recreated Whispering Rock within the Psychonauts 2 engine? Makes one lust for a Psychonauts: Special Edition.
El Poll Diablo
Due to logistics, we’re publishing The Adventurer a few days early this week, and at the time of writing, our “Should Mojo run polls on mixnmojo.com instead of Substack?” question is still live. 32% of you would prefer us to take polls back to Mojo proper, while 68% say stick to Substack. Well, huh, surprising. That leads us into today’s question:
